D.C. United Sign Luciano Emilio

The long awaited Emilio signing has finally gone through according to Goff at the Washington Post. For those of you that haven't been following breathlessly via badly translated website reports, Luciano Emilio is a Brazilian striker currently playing for Club Olimpia of Honduras. Yep, thats right, the same team that is United's first round opponent in the Concacaf Champions Cup that is coming up in a little more than a month.

At first blush this seems like a good signing by the DCU braintrust. Emilio is 28 years old, which is old, but not ancient. He is a Brazilian striker, with stints in Germany before moving to Olympia and was the top goal scorer in the Honduran league for 3 of the past 4 years. Plus, we are taking away our first round opponent's best player. Not too shabby. Goff also mentions that there will be one or two more South American moves this offseason, but the Ruy negotiations have stalled.

It's always advisable not to opine when you have no information, so I preface my opinion (and foolishly opine anyway) with that thought in mind. I know nothing of Luciano, except that he is a Brazilian. There are thousands of Brazilians playing professional soccer all around the world, but there is definitely a food chain from top to bottom. A Brazilian playing in Honduras would be closer to the bottom. This is not to say that he is bad or won't be an amazing MLS player. My only thought is that if he were really that good, he wouldn't have been toiling in Honduras the past few years, he would have been in Brazil or Mexico or even Japan. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't bode well...

if he led the league in scoring 3 of 4 years...he's a good player.

I'm sure the MLS is a higher level than Honduran league...but it's still competitive.

The other blogger listed on Goff's article said that he saw Emilio play and was impressed by his pace and quickness.

Exactly what we need it a fast striker to partner with Moreno and Gomez...

Earlier today they had a picture of him holding a jersey with the number 11 on it, to go with the website story. They've changed it to a different picture now, I notice... maybe I wasn't the only one who felt suddenly a lot less glad on seeing that picture. :P

I was reading O Globo, a newspaper in Brasil, and it was about an article about Ruy-whom DCU is/was trying to sign. Anyways, they said the the 2 sides were still negotiating, but there was a blurb there about "the unknown Luciano Emilio." I mean, if the Brasilians are don't really even know who he is, how good is he really? All they mentioned was that he played in the interior of Sao Paulo for a 2nd Div team.
