DC United chasing Veron for 2008

Ives is reporting on his blog that United " is deep in talks with Argentine star midfielder Juan Veron to sign him as a designated player for the 2008 season." Jump over ther for the full story.

Implications/Questions:
  1. How much does Veron have left in the tank? Would he adjust to the more physical play in MLS if he couldn't adjust to playing in the EPL? I'd wager he would although his current Argentine season has been marred by minor injuries.
  2. Is Gomez who we have to give up? Even in an arguably sub par season, I really hope there'd be some arrangement that keep Gomito in a United uniform. I'd rather he go overseas than to another MLS team.
  3. Do we have the slots to keep so many foreign players? Moreno has a green card, so he doesn't count against the limit. Gomez, Emilio, Fred are our current Senior Internationals. Kpene is a Youth International, and I'm not clear on if he would count as an SI next year.
  4. An interview in Ole, mentions that Veron would like to play in Copa Libertadores. If its true, is he willing to give up on that?

I am distrustful of a Veron move, but I'm pretty much distrustful of any Designated Player moves that involve risk. And most Designated Player moves will involved risk. This one isn't bad, but I'm not sure it's great. Gomez for Veron feel like we'd sacrifice something in terms of an attacking midfielder, but get the best central midfielder in the MLS. If it works.

Its funny that you leave a comment about being a bit risk-phobic, given the comment thread I just read in th RSL debrief :)

I think a Veron move would be questionable too - never really though of him as an attacking midfielder, but my knowledge of his play is minimal outside of the odd Champions League or Argentina team game.

I'm not sure I get this (possible) pickup. He would truly be a great D Mid, maybe the best in MLS. I know that "getting by" isn't the gold standard, but doesn't DC do pretty well with the Simms/Carroll combo? Why not get another Fred for the other wing with the DP slot? Or another stud forward? It just seems the DP slot should be used to replace either Jaime, Lucigol, or Christian. Some, or all, of which could be gone in the next 2-3 years. Sure Veron might bring in more fans, but so does winning.

From what I've seen, Veron doesn't look like a D-Mid that destroys the game. He seems more offensive minded than Simms or Carrol.

Maybe the thinking is that if we have Veron, we can stand losing any of those players and replace them with guys who can play off of Veron? Let's ask LA how that plan works out...
