Match Preview #11C: Open Cup Quarter Finals

Match #: 11C, Wed Aud 23 @ 7:30pm EST

Opponent: New York Red Bulls

TV & Other Media: No TV or Radio, MLSLive tv feed, but you should get to RFK.

Previous Meeting: New York 2 : 3 DC United (2003 Semi-finals)

Suggested Pregame Music: Matador by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Suggested Pregame Activity: Tailgaiting at RFK, prepare 3 quotes each for Bruce and Nowak to use after the game.

The Stakes: A trip to the semi-finals againsts the winner of the Chicago-New England matchup. The two teams last met one week ago in 1-1 draw at the Meadowlands. United needs to find the offensive rhythm it had at the beginning of the MLS season. For Arena and his team, the Open Cup is a legit shot at winning some hardware this year for his Austrian bosses.

Things I'd like to see: United come out firing, scoring first and keeping New York on their heels. Fans have to be concerned that key players need rest, so hopefully some reserve players can step up this game.

Previews from the DCUniverse: QuarterVolley, DC Sun Devil, .

Previews from New York: Nothing from the Metrologis or NY Red Bulls.

Other Media: USOpenCup.com Preview. DC United preview, Washington Times

Expected Yield: 1.5 points (Oscar).

Oscar's Location: RFK.

Kinney's and D's Locations? I assume they will be at the game as well.

The United web site says the game will be broadcast on MLSlive.tv Is this a lie?

Maybe I misread your post...the perhaps the "No" doesn't refer to the feed. There just seemed to be confusion on DCist.

Didn't the United vs. RBNY match last week end as a 0-0?

I think Oscar was drunk when he posted this. The Post, Times, Examiner and Express all have previews..

Paul - I'm not sure what the TV situation is.

Brian - We use the US Open Cup history for "Previous Meetings" in USOC Previews. Kinney started is as the idea, and it makes sense. So the previous MLS meeting won't show up until we host RBNY for a league game.

Anon - The DCUniverse previews are typically other blogs, not main media. As for Oscar being drunk, I think the purpose was really that he just wanted to shove the Bruce Arena book cover down lower in the page to stop frightening children.

Is anyone else having problems with the MLSnet live video feed? It's showing baseball for me.

I'm far from an expert when it comes to the beautiful game, so please allow me to ask what may amount to a stupid question...

why should we play our reserves in the playoffs of a cup tournament?

We have such a large cushion in the MLS standings right now that, it seems to me at least, we could find some rest for the regulars during the MLS season and still finish on top the regular season standings... Why not go all out for the Open Cup and then coast through a couple of regular season games before gearing up for the playoffs?

Again, I am a total novice when it comes to Soccer, maybe I'm putting too much value on the Open Cup? Just lookng for someone to explain it to me I guess.
