Match Preview #11B: Open Cup

Open Cup Match #: 11.B

Opponent: Columbus Crew

Records:
Columbus Cres, advanced after beating PDL side Michigan Bucks
DC United, First Open Cup match this year

TV/Radio: Audio via MLSNet

Previous Meeting: First Open Cup meeting, (see Results of MLS sides in Open Cup)

The Stakes:

The winner of this game advances to play the winner of the Metrostars vs Wilmington Hammerheads game.

For DC United, this is the first game in the Open Cup with an eye on a potential double, lest we get ahead of ourselves. Beyond chasing a second trophy, the game provides a chance to rest a few players and give some meaningful game time to others on the bench. United could use a resounding thumping of the Crew to dispell a disappointing road loss to Real Salt Lake. A win would mean the next Open Cup game for United would be played at RFK.

For Columbus, the Open Cup provides the team's hope in salvaging what is surely going to be remebered as a disappointing, injury riddled MLS season. A win over United would boost the teams confidence heading into the MLS All-Star break and down the regular season stretch.

Things I'd like to see: Rest for key players, maybe hold Moreno, Gomez on the sidelines until the second half if needed. If Brian Caroll gets a breakaway on goal, I'd like to see him put it away. See if the combination of Alecko and Jamil Walker, if uninjured, can be effective. Will Rimando get some game time, as he did in the Celtic friendly? Will John Wilson start?

Previews from the Media: Steven Goff, Washington Post

Previews from the DCUniverse:None yet...

Expected Yield: 2 points.

John Wilson is injured according to today's Goff piece.

Geez, I didn't realize we haven't beaten an MLS team in the Open Cup since the Mutiny way back in '97. Now I know why this tournament has frustrated me so much over the years.

Couch? Unknown? What, you guys don't want to experience 100-degree heat, way up in the suburban hinterlands, leave work early, fight traffic, enter the no-beer zone at the Soccerplex, only to see DC struggle in a cup that always frustrates us, coming off a miserable loss to the worst team in the league?

I question your resolve.

Don't worry. I'll be there, I mean it can't be worse than the Harbor View game. Right?

I think he was referring to the weather at the Harbor View game to which I'll agree that it can't be worse. That game was like mid-20s and windy... it was downright painful.

Yeah, it was hot. Humid. Nasty. But we got the result, and in the ned, that is all that matters, doesn't it?
